Balenciaga x Lays

The new Balenciaga bag is a collaboration with Lay’s potato chips

Balenciaga are back at it.

Balenciaga is back and the fashion house is making more controversial moves. This time, the brand is releasing a leather clutch that looks exactly like a bag of Lay’s potato chips. Yes, really.

The next viral fashion outing for Demna Gvasalia’s brand is a collaboration between Balenciaga and Frito-Lay. It’s the latest in controversial outputs – remember the Trash Bag pouch?

According to E! News, the Lays potato chip handbags are rumoured to retail at a staggering $1,800 USD.

The clutch bags will be constructed using a printed Lays graphic, a metallic silver lining and also a simple zip closure to finish.

The Lays graphic is reported to come in at least four flavour variations including original, flamin’ hot, lime and salt and vinegar. However, many more could come if the initial launch goes down well.

The Frito-Lays collaboration first debuted at Balenciaga’s SS23 presentation during Paris Fashion Week on October 2.

The show was dubbed ‘The Mud Show’ and saw models scrunching up the Balenciaga backs as they walked the runway.

The bags aren’t yet available for purchase at the time of writing. However, that hasn’t stopped Demna from sharing the accessory on his Instagram page.

The post reads “The Lay’s x Balenciaga chip bag” and features a carousel of clutch bag images. If it wasn’t for the zip finish, however, these accessories could pass for actual Lay’s potato chip.

What do you think about Balenciaga’s viral fashion experimentations? Trendsetting or taking advantage of the crowd?

Whether you love or hate it, you cannot deny that Demna and Balenciaga know how to get tongues wagging.
