Conservative party leader and Prime Minister, Boris Johnson is set to resign from his post. Despite handing in his notice this morning (7 July), he plans to serve as PM until autumn 2022.
Johnson’s resignation comes after 50 Conservative ministers dramatically walked out of his government over the past week. Damian Hinds, Simon Hart and Rishi Sunak are amongst the cabinet members who have recently stood down.
After calls from the likes of Home Secretary, Priti Patel and new Chancellor, Nadhim Zahawi to step down, Johnson has reportedly handed in his resignation.
According to ITV’s Anousha Asthana, Johnson has already communicated his desire to leave the PM post with the Queen this morning.
However, at the time of writing, BBC reported that Buckingham Palace declines to comment on whether the Queen has had any communication with Boris Johnson this morning.
Despite the Boris Johnson resignation, he apparently plans to stay in the PM role until the autumn of 2022. This is to head up the annual Conservative party conference.
Johnson is expected to make an official statement to the country this afternoon.
Resignation reactions
Amongst the doom and gloom, however, is the shining beacon of light – Twitter. Social media users have been flooding the platform to call today’s Boris Johnson resignation revelation ‘one for the books’.
Here are some of 99 Problems’ favourite reactions to Johnson’s resignation… Which coincidently lines up with Love Island’s brutal Casa Amor recoupling. Will Johnson actually be making his address in Mallorca?
I’m not sure what is going to be more explosive – the resignation speech,
the Casa Amor recoupling, or Cardi B’s headline performance
at Wireless Festival this weekend?
